Tell us about your experience?

I'm a mum of one with a background in linguistics, content creation and marketing. I've always had an interest in software development, but the lack of examples of people like me in roles like that made it difficult for me to pursue a career in tech. Now, thanks to Tech Returners, I am ready and looking forward to my first role in tech.

Tell us about your technical skills?

Before I joined Tech Returners, back in September 2019, I didn’t know what terminal or Git version control were. 15 weeks later, I was able to fully develop an app using JavaScript, React, Bootstrap, React-Router, mySQL, AWS Lambda functions... I was also able to create my own tests, build a RESTful API, use tools I hadn’t been taught about and successfully work with people I had just met in an industry that was completely new to me.

Transferable Skills

I have content, copywriting and global marketing skills honed in my previous career. I have been a team manager and I've been responsible for a content management system that serves content to one of the largest online travel agencies in the world. I am used to working with sprints, kanban boards and other scrum tools like retrospectives. I also have strong leadership skills built through those roles and responsibilities.

Tell us why you are passionate about a career in tech?

Content, language and communication are what I do and love, but I've recently decided that I want to use my skills to do a job with a greater purpose. I would like to use my skills to help people, to make others' lives better.

And although I already speak three languages, I realised the most powerful and useful language to “speak” nowadays is actually a programming language. Learning to code was a great way to reframe my career and direct it towards that goal of making people’s lives better. I also fell in love with software development along the way, and that's making this journey even more exciting.
