A desire for creativity and learning are inspiring my returner journey

I originally studied Fine Art Painting. After several years as a struggling artist, I taught myself web and graphic design skills which eventually led to a successful career in web and graphic design and production. A decade on, feeling keen to try something new and following an interest in health, I qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2015. I studied full time throughout pregnancy and raising my young daughter, and despite the long hours and sleep deprivation I somehow managed to graduate with first-class honours! I have since worked in the NHS as an OT in neurology and mental health. On a more personal note, I live in Stockport with my husband and 7-year-old daughter, and when time allows I still paint!

I have good HTML and CSS skills, which I have spent time updating recently to HTML5 and CSS3 along with understanding responsive design which is probably the biggest change since I was last on the scene.

I am currently learning Javascript which I am loving! I have a basic Command line/Bash and strong skills in vector and raster graphics design and production for the web using Adobe software (Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign).

Why a career in Tech

I have enjoyed being an OT but I really miss the creativity that I used to enjoy. Technology offers so much scope for this, along with continuously learning, improving the way things work and teamwork.

I previously never learnt any programming skills beyond hacking some Javascript for rollovers, so I feel really excited about updating my tech skills and learning all about the back end of things, which had always seemed a bit mysterious!

To be honest, without the confidence I have developed as an OT, I’m not sure I would have considered returning to technology, and without the support of Tech Returners, I really would not have known where to begin!
